My Process

All my work is hand-drawn.

After the initial drawing, I lay down the dominant tones of the piece with a first wash and then start to build up and blend layers of colour to achieve a harmonious end result. Working in colour pencil is a long process but I enjoy the detail that can be achieved with this medium.

All my colour pencil work uses professional grade, acid-free, archival paper and a mix of acclaimed artists pencil supplies - some chosen for their ease of blending, some for their tendency to hold a harder and sharp point. All are lightfast.

I also work in both traditional transparent watercolour and opaque gouache. I love how glazing with watercolour changes the colour and depth of the brush strokes. The unpredictable nature of the flow of pigment through water means that every successful piece is part artist part happy accident. Gouache gives a flatter more illustrative look but I enjoy how it allows me to rework and re-mix colours without turning muddy.

Again, all water medium works are made using professional grade, lightfast and archival artist materials.

Prints are prepared on acid-free fine art paper with high quality branded archival inks.
